When Officers' Messages Become Evidence

Discipline, terminations, decertifications, lawsuits and dismissed prosecutions arising from officers' texts, group chats, shared images and posts. Updated weekly.

A representative sample, not a complete list. Many cases are handled internally and never reported. These cases were chosen because they show recurring conduct, legal issues and outcomes.

Many of these cases did not begin with a complaint about the messages. They surfaced during unrelated investigations, lawsuits, divorces and public records requests, and the consequences often reached officers who only received the messages and said nothing.

For command staff and internal affairs, the same questions come up again and again: when the discipline clock starts, what must be disclosed to prosecutors under Brady, how far the First Amendment protects off-duty speech, and what a messaging and social media policy can lawfully require.
